Chris holds the degrees BMus, BMus (Honours), MMus and PhD from Stellenbosch University. He is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Music, where he teaches Music Theory and Music Technology at undergraduate level, supervises postgraduate research students, and is the programme manager for the BMus degree. His research focus is on the works of South African and African composers of art music (score analysis, critical theory and philosophy), with a special interest in the composer Priaulx Rainier.
Chris has presented research papers at conferences in South Africa, Serbia and the USA, and has published articles and reviews in South African Music Studies, Musicus, Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies, Musicology Australia, Österreichische Musikzeitschrift and the World New Music Magazine. His compositions have been performed locally and abroad, most recently at Harvard University’s Paine Hall in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2015 Chris was a visiting lecturer at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
